DIRECTIONS TO DIAMOND The Steens Mountain and Diamond Area which includes the Diamond Craters, French's Round Barn and Kiger Mustang Viewpoint, Frenchglen, and The Malheur Wildlife Refuge is easily accessible from Idaho, Nevada, Southern, Western and Central Oregon. Highway 20 runs from the Oregon coast to the Idaho border. You travel east to Burns and then turn south on 205 toward Frenchglen. The Diamond area is about 3/4 of the distance between Burns and Frenchglen. You will see the sign directing you to Diamond between mileposts 41 and 42 on Highway 205. Also, from 205, the Malheur Wildlife Refuge can be accessed --watch for signs, cattle and wildlife. You can also reach Diamond from the Idaho Border by turning south form Highway 20 at Buchanan. Take the Buchanan-Crane Rd. south to Highway 78. At the Crane Junction, continue south on Highway 78 for 10 miles to the Diamond-Princeton Road. Follow the signs to Diamond. Traveling from the south, you can reach Diamond and Frenchglen on Highway 205 through Denio and Fields; or, if on Highway 95, take Highway 78 at Burns Junction and travel north to the Princeton-Diamond Road. A well maintained unpaved road connects with Highway 78 and 205 going through the Alvord Desert aned showcasing the east face of Steens Mountain. |
