LAUNDRY

Can't have clotheslines, or the weather is bad? Spin your clothes in the washer and put them in the dryer for 10 minutes. Then hang them on hangers from a rod installed over the laundry sink. Otherwise use a spare bathroom shower rod. The clothes do not shrink and usually do not need to be ironed. Socks and underwear can remain in the dryer for a few minutes to dry.

  • Wash Clothes in cold or warm water
  • Saves gas and/or electricity
  • Clothes do not shrink and last longer if they are not dried in a dryer

DISHWASHING

  • Run the dishwasher only when full and don't use heat to dry dishes: open door when rinsing is finished and they will dry as you put them way.

BUILDING

HEATING and COOLING

Attic Fans Cool Entire Home
During the hot summer months, attic temperatures can reach up to 160 degrees, and even though passive cooling systems, such as ridge vents, can certainly disperse the heat, fans can make it more efficient.

In the summer:
Open windows at night to cool the house. Close them in the morning to retain the cool air.

During the winter: close doors to rooms you do not use and turn down the heat if they have individual thermostats, or close registers, if you have a central heat source.

Invest in having a natural gas line installed if you do not have it already. A propane system can be installed if you do not have natural gas available.

Consider having a gas fireplace installed in a living area or use gas logs in an existing fireplace with a thermostat to turn it on and off as needed for heat.

Operating skylights provide light for inside rooms and ventilation during the summer. If you have vaulted ceilings, electric ceiling fans distribute the cool air down. The warm air that rises escapes through the open skylights. In the winter the ceiling fans force the warm air down and makes heating more efficient.

GETTING PLACES
  • Walk, bike, carpool or use public transportation whenever possible
