HEATING and COOLING
Attic Fans Cool Entire Home
During the hot summer months, attic temperatures can reach up to 160 degrees, and even though passive cooling systems, such as ridge vents, can certainly disperse the heat, fans can make it more efficient.
In the summer:
Open windows at night to cool the house. Close them in the morning to retain the cool air.
During the winter: close doors to rooms you do not use and turn down the heat if they have individual thermostats, or close registers, if you have a central heat source.
Invest in having a natural gas line installed if you do not have it already. A propane system can be installed if you do not have natural gas available.
Consider having a gas fireplace installed in a living area or use gas logs in an existing fireplace with a thermostat to turn it on and off as needed for heat.
Operating skylights provide light for inside rooms and ventilation during the summer. If you have vaulted ceilings, electric ceiling fans distribute the cool air down. The warm air that rises escapes through the open skylights. In the winter the ceiling fans force the warm air down and makes heating more efficient.
