Balloon enthusiasts gathered again this year to view the take off at Summit High School and landing on the east side of town. However, the weather had a different plan and instead, the balloons moved to Bear Creek Elementary on the east side to begin the unpredictable flight that made the day for many unsuspecting people. Delighted passebys witnessed the landing of the Liberty Bank balloon on Riverside Blvd, next to Drake Park. After the balloon was walked into the park, children were given the opportunity to board the balloon for a brief lift-off.
A party and nightlighting took place at Pilot Butte State Park and came off without a hitch. Four balloons that were tethered in place fired their burners to light the sky.
Sunday's flight began at Lava Ridge Elementary and Sky View Middle School on the east side, but the wind currents prevented the balloons from moving in a favorable direction. Most of them returned to the ground after a very short time. Those of us who follow the balloons every year were not disappointed, however, and look forward to next year when they return to the skies over Bend.
